Regular price €678.71

We are really happy to offer our NEW 12 weeks immersive Pottery wheel, Handbuilding and Glazing course in Dublin and hope you will learn loads of clay skills and have some fun over 12 evenings during the Winter months.

At the end of the course you will take home 7 pieces made and glazed by you!

The course has three complementary areas of learning:

1. pottery wheel throwing

2. creative handbuilding

3. glaze decoration

LEARNING OUTCOMES

1. Pottery Wheel Throwing:

You will work on your individual pottery wheel to shape clay, learning throwing, centering, and pulling techniques and making pottery pieces.

- Demonstrations by one of our excellent teachers of how to throw clay on a wheel, and tutoring you on your own wheel as you learn.

- Practice on your own wheel with clay and your own wareboard.

You will develop the skills you need to throw pots including making a mug and bowl on a pottery wheel, involving:

- handling your clay and pottery tools

- centering and pulling your pieces on your wheel

- shaping techniques

- taking your pot off your wheel

- taking care of your wheel station

2. Creative Handbuilding:

You will learn to make different pottery items using a slab roller, cutting and shaping tools.

- coiling, slabbing, pinching, building, and sculpting techniques to make coiled bowls and pinch pots

- carving out of a block of clay forming decorative house/sculpture

- handling clay and understanding your pottery tools

- taking care of your work station

 3. Glaze Decoration:

You will learn decorative techniques including:

Slip decoration - Slip is a coloured or uncoloured liquified clay which can be treated like paint to decorate clay pieces. You will be taught how to use slip, opening up methods of decoration beyond traditional glazing. Slip can be used to create broad abstract textured images or flat precise detailed work.

Sgraffitto - You will be taught how to use the sgraffitto method of decoration, which is technically a form of slip decoration. Contrasting colours of slip are layered onto your unfired clay. Your design or pattern is then scratched or carved into the dried slip to reveal the different colours beneath.
